Community Partners

The local food and sustainable agriculture community in Central Virginia is strong. This is in large part due to the diversity of organizations committed to promoting these endeavors. We are pleased to have had the opportunity to work with the groups below.

Virginia Food System Council – Working to advance a nutrient-rich and safe food system for Virginians at all income levels, with an emphasis on access to local food, successful linkages between food producers and consumers, and a healthy viable future for Virginia’s farmers and farmland.

Virginia Farmers Direct Marketing Association (VFDMA) – In 1980, the VFDMA was formed to encourage and promote direct marketing in Virginia. Through annual conferences and trade shows, farm tours, workshops, and special promotional events, VFDMA members are provided the opportunity to network with other direct marketers while learning the latest production and marketing techniques.

Virginia FAIRS – The Virginia Foundation for Agriculture, Innovation and Rural Sustainability (VA FAIRS) assists rural Virginians in developing and advancing their agricultural, economic and social interests to enhance their quality of life.

Virginia Association for Biological Farming (VABF) – The Virginia Association for Biological Farming (VABF) is the primary organization in the state of Virginia concerned with organic and biological farming and gardening.

Buy Fresh Buy Local VirginiaBuy Fresh Buy Local helps consumers find local products while building relationships between growers, food artisans, farmers’ markets retailers, restaurants, and institutions.

Center for Rural Culture – The mission of the Center for Rural Culture is to educate, promote and inspire members of our community to sustain a culture that supports agriculture and the local economy, protects natural and historic resources, and maintains our rural character and traditions.

ChiknEGG – ChiknEGG Productions promotes Sustainable Agriculture & FOOD – growing, selling, cooking, preserving, eating & celebrating food and our food system! We are Educational Go Getters!

G.H. Reid Elementary – The mission of G. H. Reid Elementary School is to maintain and develop a holistic approach to education. The school has a garden and a green house from which the students have sold vegetables at their own farmers market.

Partnership for Smarter Growth – The Partnership for Smarter Growth champions citizen engagement and smarter growth policies and implementation. Its mission is to educate and engage the communities in the Richmond region to work together to improve our quality of life by guiding where and how we grow.

Shalom Farm – Shalom Farms is a regional food security, community development project of United Methodist Urban Ministries of Richmond. Shalom Farms and its partner network connects communities in which poverty is high (food insecurity exists) with fresh, healthy foods, while building community and increasing the self-sufficiency of those involved.

Slow Food RVA – We are a grassroots movement with over 100,000 members in 132 countries around the world that links the pleasure of food with a responsible commitment to community and the environment.

USDA Rural Development – We are committed to helping improve the economy and quality of life in rural America. Through our programs, we touch rural America in many ways. USDA Rural Development has a $155 billion portfolio of loans and will administer $20 billion in loans, loan guarantees and grants through our programs in the current fiscal year. We achieve our mission by helping rural individuals, communities and businesses obtain the financial and technical assistance needed to address their diverse and unique needs.

Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) – We promote the economic growth and development of Virginia agriculture, provide consumer protection and encourage environmental stewardship.
